Field Trips

Big Onion Walking Tours has been leading entertaining and informative tours of New York’s historic districts and neighborhoods since 1991, specializing in unique out-of-the-classroom excursions. Our tours are a stimulating way to supplement your classwork and bring the traditional curriculum to life!

Topics

Many of our walks directly tie into the educational curriculum, including history, literature, science, music and art. All our walking tours are available for private student bookings.

The Immigrant Experience

New York City’s historic and ethnic neighborhoods are our specialty! Our Immigrant New York tour provides an overview of the history of immigration in the city, and explores the lives and experiences of the immigrants of both yesterday and today on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Or, if you’re interested in a multi-sensory learning experience, our revamped Multi-Ethnic Eating Tour mixes noshing with learning!

New York and the American Revolution

As a crucial center of the Revolution, New York City is a great place to explore America’s early history! Our Revolutionary New York walk goes in-depth into the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Early Republican periods of the U.S.

American Literature & Culture

Our Greenwich Village and Historic Harlem walks bring together New York’s great legacy of writers, artists, and cultural leaders who have drawn inspiration from the City and its people.

U.S. History & STEAM

A unique tour, STEAM in the Village: Artistry, Invention & Exploration, explores the role of New York City and its people in the historic development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics). An exciting new experience to help bridge the gap between modern science/technology and the social sciences!

New York and the History of Social Justice

Our newest tour, From ‘The Crisis’ to The Stonewall: A History of Social Justice in Greenwich Village brings together important social & political thinkers as well as significant social justice movements in New York City.
