1654 Society

1654 Society of Congregation Shearith Israel

Big Onion Walking Tours and the 1654 Society of Congregation Shearith Israel have partnered to welcome visitors to the historic Colonial Jewish cemetery of Chatham Square. Consecrated in 1656, this is the oldest extant Jewish cemetery in North America. More than twenty participants of the Revolutionary War are buried here as is Gershom Mendes Seixas (America’s first native born Hazan - present at the inauguration of George Washington) and Dr. Walter Jonas Judah (died in 1798 during the yellow fever epidemic). Previously closed to the public, the Chatham Square cemetery will be opened during select Big Onion tours. A $3 per person contribution to the 1654 Society is required. All contributions go to the restoration and preservation of this unique historic site.
